Unsuccessful, she is wandering behind the shops when she smells the bread of the bakers'.
Each night, faces of the dead are broadcast into the sky. While volunteers are rare, they are permitted, and so Katniss is ushered onstage, where she wonders whether the Mayor remembers the sad day long ago when he presented her with a medal to honor her father's demise. Throughout these chapters, she exhibits a great command over her emotions. Katniss returns to her home in the ruins of to recover from her traumatic ordeal, where she is eventually joined by Peeta, who has fully recovered his memories and his love for Katniss. They meet their fellow victors from the other Districts. Johanna tells about how her group was surprised by a rain of blood, causing them to become blinded, and one tribute getting killed by an electric forcefield.

Struck by droughts, storms, rising seas, and other natural problems, North America essentially dissolved, and the country of Panem rose up in its place. She is shocked at having such a fine dinner, and the exquisite detail she uses to describe her meals becomes a repeated motif throughout the novel. Teamed with a group of her closest friends — including , , and — Katniss goes off on a mission with the unit from as they risk their lives to liberate the citizens of , and stage an assassination attempt on President Snow who has become increasingly obsessed with destroying her. Katniss is particularly affected to see a 12-year old from District 11, whose apparent frailty reminds her of Prim. Part 1: The Tributes In the first third of the book, we are introduced to our protagonist, Katniss Everdeen. They are to appear inseparable, which, as the training goes on, becomes increasingly tiring for Katniss, who can't decide whether Peeta's kindness and compliments are genuine or simply a part of a scheme for winning the Games.
